I have TFA enabled on half a dozen other sites and apps i use, and none of these require a secondary app to get the job done, or a backup email address. Still, it did perform as intended and get me set up on the first try. Three stars for actually working, two off for having to do it with yet another app. There is a better way. Overall a pleasure to work with Xero, but limited email templates and quote layout options as well as font options.

When setting up MFA, you can install the authenticator app on your computer, but it works best if you use your smartphone instead. Multi-factor authentication MFA provides a second layer of security that stops anyone else accessing your Xero account, even if they know your password.
For security reasons, we recommend you install the authenticator app on a different device to the one you use to access Xero.
This is especially important if you share the device you use to access Xero with others. To avoid this, we recommend installing the authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet. You can use an authenticator app of your choice but we recommend Xero Verify.
It's the only app using push notifications to log in to Xero. With push notifications, a message pops up on your smartphone or tablet. Xero Verify only sends notifications when you're logging in to Xero. If you don't have a smartphone, or can't use your smartphone for MFA, you can install an authenticator app such as Authy Authy website , to your laptop or desktop computer.
To set up MFA you'll need to access your Xero organisation using a web browser. You can't set up MFA using the Xero mobile app. Follow the steps in Xero to add your Xero account to the app. Add a backup email address, then click Continue. Your answers can only contain letters or numbers, and not any symbols or special characters. While logged in to Xero, click your initials or profile image at the top right of the screen, then select Account.
They also need to be five or more characters. You're now set up to use MFA next time you log into Xero. If you can't install apps on your work computer yourself, ask your IT team to install an authenticator app for you, either on your computer or your organisation's server. There are a number of authenticator apps available, such as our recommended app Authy. Alternatively, you can use the steps below to do this.
To ensure the time on the device you installed your authenticator app on is accurate, let your network provider set it automatically. When you set up MFA, Xero asks you to add a backup email address or security questions.
A backup email address is the easiest option. When you set up MFA you choose some security questions from a drop-down list to provide answers to. If you ever need to use a backup method to log in to Xero, just enter the same answers to your security questions.
You can change your backup method at any time. Ask our community of customers, accountants and bookkeepers. Skip to main content Search icon Search Xero Central. What's next? Still have questions?
